Some Cool Things
30 December 2004 Posted By: TrevorPosted in: Blog Related, Trevor's Updates
First off, Tracy and I want to thank each and every one of you reading this. The Student Tablet PC has amassed over 10,000 hits since opening on December 1st. The response is really incredible and we are very appreciative for everything. Please keep your ideas and requests coming in.
Second cool thing: My friend from high school IMed me tonight with a question. By the way, that is my actual AIM screen name if you want to reach me.
Note Strategies in Tablet Terms
30 December 2004 Posted By: TracyPosted in: General Tips, Note-Taking, Tablet Concepts
While I was browsing today I discovered Dartmouth College is one of many colleges that has handouts online at their Academic Skill Center talking on Learning Strategies (don’t forget to check out your own schools learning center, if they have one). I’m always looking for ways to make more useful and organized notes, so of course I read it closely seeing how I could include some ideas into my own.
So now, for your enjoyment, here are parts of a handout on Taking Notes with additions from me on how using a Tablet PC with digital ink makes everything SO much better…
Medical Texts Online at the NCBI
29 December 2004 Posted By: TracyPosted in: Digital Books, Tablet PC University Series
If you’re in the Medical/Science field, you may want to check out the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnical Information) website. It has a number of free searchable texts which are always handy to have in conjunction with a Tablet PC.
"The Bookshelf is a growing collection of biomedical books that can be searched directly by typing a concept into the textbox above and selecting "Go". Try one of these searches:
"cell cycle control…………..immunodeficiency………….. protein evolution
"Books are also linked to terms in PubMed abstracts: when viewing an abstract, select the "Books" link to see phrases within the abstract hyperlinked to book sections."
A little bit of Infopath
28 December 2004 Posted By: TrevorPosted in: Other, Software Info
I was reviewing the Buzz today and I happened upon some people who were interested in using InfoPath. Now InfoPath is part of Microsoft Office 2003, but it has been my experience that most people do not know what the hell it is.
I actually used infopath to design and carry out of a survey for class. It was a course in entrepreneurship and our final project was to develop a business idea that could generate $20 million in revinue in 3 years. My group’s idea was SkyTunes. With SkyTunes you could rent an iPod preloaded with your favorite music, take it with you while waiting for your flight and during your flight and drop it off at your destination. This is the story of a survey…
Digital Camera Scanning?
28 December 2004 Posted By: TracyPosted in: Digital Books, Scanning
If you don’t have a nice scanner and you want to go paperless this semester, don’t feel bummed! Do you have (or know someone who has) a nice digital camera? If so, this post is for you.
Don’t have a camera either? Nice digital cameras (3.5mpx or above) are about the same price as nice scanners ($200-$300 new), so if you can only afford one, and you have a use for a camera (such as, you have a life…, lol), this could pull you through and get you that lightweight, paperless, bookless feeling you’ve always wanted (I feel like an infomercial…).

The Geek Factor: Should You be Worried?
24 December 2004 Posted By: TracyPosted in: Tablet Concepts
I think a lot of students are unsure if they want the attention and geekdom they fear the tablet PC may bring with it. I wondered that too. While I may not be the hippest around and go to all the raves, I do try to stay in the know and act semi-cool (I have the kitty heel suede boots and my cool leather jacket, for example). I have enough problems with my rising nerd factor because of engineering and too many math classes, I was very afraid having a high-tech expensive toy in class would NOT help the problem…
GoBinder Review
21 December 2004 Posted By: TracyPosted in: GoBinder, Software Info
It’s probably well known by now I use GoBinder from all the snips of it you’ve seen in previous articles. To get this out of the way, I’ll use my free afternoon today to do an insider’s review of this program to further help you decide which program to use before the spring semester (it’s recommended by many to choose a method and stick too it through a semester because switching mid-game can be a real pain). Take a look at Rob Bushway’s Notetaking Comparison Chart for more details on available programs and what they offer if you’re really having a tough time at it.
Archiving Your Notes
20 December 2004 Posted By: TrevorPosted in: General Tips, Note-Taking, Organization
Hey everyone! I’m back.
So I’m all finished with finals and another semester is behind me. Now if I was using some antiquated paper I’d be filing all my notes and stashing my notebooks away somewhere where I would never use them again. Us tablet users are better able to take advantage of the notes we’ve taken and more easily store them for later use. How should you archive your notes so that you can make the most of them for later?
