OneNote Planner Plug-In, v2.0 (with video!)
byI had a yearning for the flexibility and ease of my trusty weekly planner I used pre-tablet pc, so I decided to create my own using OneNote 2003.
Some of you may remember version 1.0 a while back (called the Organizer), however that one was a little clunky and too much for what I wanted to do. I made a very simple one this time. This resides in only one section and only has basic tools, mostly ones you can’t easily use in Outlook, although I did include a contact page and yearly overview.
I still use Outlook for long-term scheduling and planning, however it currently lacks the quick day to day planning I really enjoy with a weekly planner. I like to have the big events stand out, to be able to think about what I’m doing as I write it out longhand and add little notes here and there. I know, Outlook is a powerful tool and I just need to harness it and yadda yadda, but that’s not what I want. I want the freedom of paper (or the like).

Because of the simplicity of the planner and wide range of templates on DIYPLanner.com, I’m including a video with a quick run through of the add-in so you can see it before you download, and also a tutorial of how to work with stationary to customize the planner for your own use. A complete installation tutorial is also included.
Download the Planner.one file (1.2 MB)
Watch the OneNote Planner video (5:06 min, 4 MB)
Please leave your questions/comments on the planner! I’d love to hear them!

Awhile back, Tracy Hooten of The Student Tablet PC created a Daily Planner plug-in for OneNote. Well she’s recently updated the plug-in to version 2. She’s also put up a video demo of the how-to’s for you to check out
February 18th, 2006 at 8:15 amTracy, do you use Outlook very much?
February 18th, 2006 at 11:33 amI love the stationary and in the two years of using OneNote I really never liked using it as a planner (always preferred GoBinder for this and OneNote for class notes) but maybe now with this planner I can have everything in one program!
My only gripe was that the numbers were a bit blurry on the 06-07 yearly page but this is probably just my computer as it sometimes doesn’t play nice with images and text, so I just changed this page to look a bit nicer for my tablet and now I have an awesome planner for OneNote! Also great work on the video!

February 18th, 2006 at 8:04 pmWhere did you get that gtd quick reference chart?
February 18th, 2006 at 8:11 pmDesi - The GTD reference was in the DIYPlanner template set.
dds2009 - I use Outlook a fair amount, however I wasn’t looking a new system, I was looking for a way to implement my old system.
February 19th, 2006 at 2:03 amTracy, this is fantastic! Thanks!
February 19th, 2006 at 7:27 pmGreat guide Tracy.
A couple points/questions:
Is it possible to have the template list the actual date in the box next to the day of the week for ALL the tabs, not just the current week?
I am constantly flipping to the calendar page to fill out the actual date next to the days of the week on the individual weekly planning pages. The prospect of filling 358 of these is not exciting me
Keep up the great work!
February 19th, 2006 at 9:30 pmVery nice… I’ve been struggling with trying to find a balance between the flexibility of OneNote and the organizational capabilities of Outlook… this may just be the answer.
Great post. I also thought using the clipping tool as a “telestrator” was very clever.
February 20th, 2006 at 1:06 pmi hope you plan to make one for future years
April 12th, 2006 at 8:59 pmThanks so much Tracy! The video was especially helpful. I’ve undergone the same jolt as you when GoBinder 2006 came out. (Buggy as all heck) So I guess it’s time to get excited about ON 2007.
Hey does anyone know of a good way to use the OneNote Note Flags? I need some help with that.
April 20th, 2006 at 7:05 pmThank you so so much Tracy! Excelent screencast!!
What screen size is your tablet?
Which is the minimum size you’ll recommend so that this is actually usable?
Many thanks. Best. TFS
May 16th, 2006 at 1:46 pmWow, I think this is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I hope it works with OneNote 2007.
