JK over at his run did some research with interesting results. Evidently, it seems that tablets have additional bulk over the equivalent notebook models. Perhaps its the hinge, perhaps its the digitizer. Maybe someone can shed some light.

m400-saw.jpgNo sooner has the the bludgeoned CPU of Dell’s last victim cooled down and they have seen fit to release yet another video clip of electronic execution. The helpless victim this time, in promotion of Dell’s own upcoming Latitude Tablet PC, is a Toshiba M400 (as IDed by Rob Bushway) and the executioner’s ‘overkill’ weapon of choice this time around is a table saw.

Snapter turns sub zero

snapter_logo.gifYou’ll remember back in April that we introduced you to Snapter, a software based scanning solution that utilises a digital camera as its primary means of input? Well Sarasin at Atiz has dropped me an email announcing that the software has been incarnated into a new version and renamed Snapter Ice 2.0. It seems our collective voice, and the testing efforts of power users such as Hugh Sung and Karla, have made Atiz sit up and listen. The biggest issues with the previous version i.e. poor recognition results and the inability to reposition the ‘border nodes’ in Book mode have apparently been bashed out and a valuable whiteboard recognition mode has been added (sweet!). The software also sports a new interface and is fully Vista compatible.

The Tablet PC Law

Lightweight and portable, long batterylife or powerful. Pick two.

Unfortunately its impossible for tablet PC designers to suit everyone’s individual needs. Power requires large energy consumption, longer battery life requires a larger battery and the list of effects goes on.

Fortunately with advances in batteries, miniaturization and more power efficient processors, notebooks and tablets are becoming more balanced, blurring the lines a bit but even in the most recent tablets, there is still the ability to identify their strengths and weaknesses.

What do you think the two most important factors for students are? Pick an option on the poll and join the discussion in the comments.

NaturalReader: Let your tablet do all the reading

Posted in: Digital Books, Study Aids

Having a tablet lets you do many tasks with more interaction than you would otherwise. Many student tablet owners decide to digitize their books for easier reference and a lighter daily load, but digital books also have other advantages. They’re normal text and therefore you can do anything with them you can do to text, such as copy and paste into reports/notes. Such as…use a program that can convert text to speech (hmm…).

Maybe this is just my personal lack of concentration kicking in, but have you ever opened a textbook to read, only to realize ten minutes later you’re still on the same page? Assuming you don’t have any problem reading in general, this type of situation needs a little extra focus.

LAPTOP Magazine: When It’s Time to Consider a Tablet

LAPTOP Magazine posted an article for their Back to School special listing five excellent reasons to get a tablet if you’re a student (note their primary source :-P).

Imagine how much more productive you’d be if your handwritten lecture notes had a Google-like search ability, were organized in a completely logical way, and even had audio clips of the lecture built-in. According to Tracy Hooten, a senior at the University of Texas at Austin and the founder of StudentTabletPC.com, those are just a few of the ways Tablet notebooks save students time and alleviate stress. We talked to Tracy about the benefits of a Tablet over a regular notebook and came away with five reasons why you should consider one for yourself…[read more]

The X61 vs Everthing Else - Part 2 (better late than never)

It’s a fact that students are not the most wealthy people. It’s a combination of being busy studying and being lazy. It’s these facts that make it difficult for most students to afford desireable pieces of tech like tablet PCs.

You may have realised that the purpose of this 3 part series isn’t just to critically analyse the Lenovo X61t but also to have a look at what else is out there.

Another Student Review of the Lenovo X61 Tablet (yours truly’s!)

ThinkPad X61 Tablet

While you can’t beat reviews like the ones on GottaBeMobile and TabletPCReview–with video, technical specs, and benchmarks–this review is not really like that (except that my Vista score is a 3.4). It will be full of opinions because that’s what I do. You have been warned.

To summarize, I really like the X61. I think every student wondering what tablet to buy should stop wondering now and go order one. It will save you time and the chance of making the wrong decision. Sorry, buddy, but Kevin, the X61 is where it’s at. (See? I’m just full of opinions. I warned you).

Also note that I won’t have many X61 pictures for now since my camera is currently dead.
