Sorry for my post drought!!

drought.jpgHi All. I just wanted to pop on to say hello and to apologise for my personal post drought of late. Frustratingly due to seminar meetings, a major essay on fourteenth-century battle tactics, a full-blown presentation on the Battle of Crecy and my ongoing dissertation on caliphal mosque development my head has been well and truly buried in the academic ’sand’ for the past few weeks. I just marvel at how the guys ‘n’ gals over at places like GottaBeMobile and jkOnTheRun etc. manage to hold down jobs AND blog so often. Well however they manage it, I really do salute them for it.

Delldirect Defends Latitude XT

Despite one of the most major developments in Tablets in recent months, the Latitude XT being released, StudentTabletPc.com has been relatively quiet about the whole thing. Not because its not a great tablet, it is, its just that its priced quite prohibitively for students. Nonetheless, Dell has tried to make it quite clear where the advantages are compared to the two other rivals. They even made a chart however no matter what way I look at it still puts the X61t out in front. Have a read yourself and be sure to check the comments.

Amtek iTablet T221

If this turns out to be what it says on the spec sheet and looks like it does in the picture, this could be getting close to what the ultimate tablet would be. Of course everyone’s definition of ultimate varies but if yours looks like the picture above and has a 12.1-inch XGA display, an active digitizer, resistive touchscreen, a 1.2GHz Intel Core Duo CPU, up to 2GB of RAM, a 60GB hard drive, 802.11a/b/g, and a GMA 950 graphics chipset then Amtek has the computer for you.

Multitouch your computer

I saw this up on Hack a day a few days ago but didn’t pay much attention to it but when a friend of mine forced me to watch it I got right into it. Superhero Johnny Chung Lee uses a Wiimote and some infrared pens to create a multitouch input panel out of any display. Watch to the end for some m200 multitouch action. Im thinking of giving this a go later today so if I have some cool results I’ll let you know.

Asus Eee PC Sighting on Campus

4 December 2007 Posted By: Tracy
Posted in: Hardware, Low Budget Tablets

This isn’t a tablet, nor does it have a rotating screen, but the Asus Eee PC is obviously a device a student could appreciate. At around $400 and light as a hardback book, it’s a handy tool for typing papers and reading around campus (like a Kindle with a keyboard).

I didn’t realize how small they were until I saw one in person yesterday. Apparently a guy in my class has one since he was using it in our study lounge and looked to be efficiently typing some paper just fine on the little keys. Interesting.

I’ve also seen two folks in my classes purchase the low-priced HP Pavilion Tablet PC this semester thanks to it being THE ONLY TABLET IN STORES AROUND HERE. Sigh Of all tablets to be in stores. I’m all for touchscreen, but not ONLY touchscreen. I guess it’s better than nothing. That now makes four tablet users in my class of ~70.

I’m getting more excited about CES by the day, now that I’m attending for once! I wouldn’t miss this meet-up for anything so you can count me in (along with my tablet-using fiancĂ© who I’ll be dragging along :-D). Leave a message here if you plan on attending, wherever it is, or RSVP on Facebook or below.

Enthusiasts, users, OEMs, ISVs, IHVs are invited to attend the fifth Tablet PC & UMPC Community Gathering. The annual gathering takes place during 2008 International CES. It has been an excellent place for people to share information about new products, tips on existing products, and enjoy meeting people involved in the community.

Here’s to Three Great Years! Happy Birthday, Blog!

3 December 2007 Posted By: Tracy
Posted in: Blog Related

That’s right, technically we’re three years and two days old now, but it completely slipped my mind! From that first post December 1st, 2004, we went from one author to six, one post to 581, and four comments to 3,294.

Thank you to all who have stuck with us through the years with our many style changes, our many lulls in posting, and our (OK, my) many blogging faux pas that I’m sure I’ve made here and there :-D. I’ve had a great time and I’ve met so many interesting people that I can’t wait to see what the future has in store.

Happy birthday, Student Tablet PC!!! Onward to birthday #4!
