Acrobat Commenting

I was speaking with Eric Mack and he mentioned his search for a program which kept track of what you highlighted. It didn’t dawn on me until then that Acrobat may be an answer (though not ideal).

If you’ve used Adobe Acrobat 7.0 before, you likely know that you can mark-up your PDF files by highlighting text, underlining text, and adding comments. By selecting a commenting option and using the comment list/summary, you can give yourself a list of every word you mark up.

More details after the jump.

More Time With Acrobat

I just finished scanning my first textbook for this semester and I thought I’d share a few things I came across.

First, I’m now convinced the method I outlined in the Acrobat article is a great way to scan books. Not only did I get great quality scans, but it was super easy and I now have a 600 page book with searchable text and bookmarks taking up a minor 17MB of space. Sweetness.

MODI vs. Acrobat & a MODI How-To

After doing the Adobe Acrobat post, I started thinking about Microsoft Office Document Imaging (a neat little part of Microsoft Office rarely noticed since it’s in the “Tools” folder). I decided to do a trial run to see if this program, which came with something I had anyway, could stand up to $229 Acrobat.

The engineer in me wants to report back, “The programs do close enough to the same thing at almost the same level,” but to please the scientists, mathematicians and med students out there (don’t forget to click our poll!), I made sure to write down some numbers to let you decide for yourselves. Each program was tested with sixteen black and white 6″x9″ pages of the same chapter of the same book with the same scanner settings. That’s as close as I was going to get to apples vs. apples.

Also, after the comparison, I’ve included a How-To on scanning your books with MODI, so don’t forget to keep scrolling if you’re interested.

We’ve talked a lot about scanning books, and we’ve talked a lot about reading and marking up books, but we’ve kinda neglected the creation part of it. This post will try to fill the gap between buying the scanner and having a finished product to play with.

Summary:
1. Why Adobe Acrobat
2. The Scanning
3. Making the PDF
4. OCR
5. Other Methods

I found a nice answer on TabletPCBuzz.com to a question on how to keep file size down, speed up the process, and just really what to do after getting the book scanned. A big thanks to Buzz member mikieatton for letting us post his answer.
