Fitting a ‘better’ Cornell page template into OneNote

Well my migration over to OneNote is going pretty good. I’ve used it exclusively now in both of the scheduled 3 hour seminars I’ve attended so far, along with numerous other note-taking tasks, and I’ve got to say I’m thoroughly enjoying the experience and that’s without even getting my teeth into, shall we call it, the ‘power features’ of OneNote yet, such as side notes and note flags etc.

Of course a large part of the ‘moving in’ process has involved a ‘custom fitting’ tweak of the interface i.e. re-positioning OneNote’s toolbars, the removal and addition of buttons etc. and a ‘figuring out’ session on how to incorporate my established electronic filing system, but everything has been straightforward and hassle-free.

Making OneNote Printer-Friendly

One of my major gripes about OneNote is that the pages will get longer, but they won’t tell you where the page will cut off if you have to print it to paper. For random scribbles and day-to-day operations, this is fine, but if you’re getting ready for that open note test, being able to easily print without equations/diagrams getting cut in half is important.

Here are two easy ways to make your life easier for those moments when you’re forced to surrender control to paper printouts.

Office Ultimate 2007: $60

Update II:Now it looks like 8pm. Is everyone else seeing this being pushed back as well, or is my computer just flipping out?

Update: Looks like they pushed back the start of the event by a couple of hours to 7pm Mountain Time.

This has already been picked up by a couple of sites, including GottaBeMobile (I saw it there first, so they get the credit), but it’s worth mentioning again just because it’s such a great deal. Starting just about….now, you can pick up a copy of Office 2007 Ultimate for $60 (yes, that’s sixty dollars, not six-hundred). You get the big four: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, plus OneNote, Access, and Publisher, and then some other programs you may not find as useful: Accounting Express, Infopath and Groove.

OneNote 2007 Tip: Scratch Out

A quick tip that I picked up earlier today while studying for exams.

In OneNote 2007, rather than using the eraser on your pen to erase your misspelled word or accidental scribble you can actually just cross it out.

Just scribble a few continuous horizontal lines across your error and it will dissapear.

Evidently, this option is only available after OneNote 2003 SP1, however, it also works in the Tablet Input Panel (TIP) since XP SP2.

I dont know how I missed this shortcut but at least it has given me a chance to get my pen spinning down pat with all the eraser swapping that I have been doing.

6 Simple OneNote 2007 Tips

1. Insert Space to Widen the Page

You probably know you can make the page longer by inserting space, but did you know you can make the page wider by inserting space? Click the “Insert/Remove Space” button and move the cursor to the edge of the page. You should see the insert/remove line change to a vertical bar instead of horizontal.

Insert

2. Open the Pen Toolbar

The default OneNote set-up doesn’t have the pen toolbar exposed. The first thing I recommend for people with a Tablet PC to do is bring out the toolbar (View—>My Pens Toolbar) and find a nice home for it. You can even dock it on the bottom of the screen if that works best for you.

Sliding over to OneNote…again

Yes, OK, I will admit I tossed OneNote last semester when it died right before finals and I couldn’t get to my notes for a week. The extra functionality just didn’t seem worth the hassle.

But I’m not one to hold a grudge. I can’t remember but I think I might have been still using the Office Beta 2, anyway. After a while of opening six PowerPoints, four Word documents and a few PDFs just to do some homework, I decided to try a program that I could group all those files together. Journal also isn’t quite as stable under Vista as it was with XP, so it was worth a shot.

Where, oh where, did the OneNote beta go?

1 November 2006 Posted By: Tracy

Has anyone tried finding the OneNote beta lately? Has anyone actually found it? I’ve been searching all day and I’m out of ideas.

The Microsoft Beta site? No, the links send you to the Office 2007 beta download. Is it in the Office pack now? No, there’s still no sign of OneNote there either. A Google shows no signs of a relocation, and I can’t think of a better place to fine the OneNote 2007 beta than the OneNote “Connect” website (the Connect site is replacing Microsoft Beta Place), and yet, no OneNote.

Why am I looking so desperately? My OneNote 2007 decided to break and refused to open without promptly crashing soon after. After trying to simply repair the program through Add/Remove Programs with no luck, I uninstalled thinking I could easily reinstall by redownloading the beta (once I relized I no longer had the original file download). Hm. (UPDATE: no longer in need of file, but still wondering where it went on the web)

Does anyone know where it went?

“My One and Only OneNote”

Warning: This tune’s catchy!

Mike Tholfson, on the Microsoft OneNote team, emailed me the link to a song that he had written and recorded. I think it’s cute, and not that bad! Thanks, Mike! Click here to listen (MP3).

Let me tell you ’bout my favorite application
A software notebook for the modern age
One place for all of your notes
Put any type of content on the digital page

A flexible tool that works the way you do
Organize your stuff how you want to
Brainstorms or meeting notes or doing web research
Capture, find, share and re-use

No other software can make me feel this way

My one and only OneNote
My one and only OneNote
My one and only OneNote
It’s the one for me

Use a shared notebook for group collaboration
Or start a live sharing session with your friends
Like a rich wiki with merge and replication
Everyone’s in sync when the meeting ends

Tables, tags, clippings, instant search and Lasso
Drawing tools, embedded files and hyperlinks
XML APIs and caching all your data
Outlook integration and digital ink

No other software can make me feel this way

(chorus)

It’s part of the 2007 Office System
Download OneNote for a 60 day trial
Give it a chance and I promise you
It will change the way you work and leave you with a smile

No other software can make me feel this way

(chorus)

Test Drive OneNote 2007

If you’ve been waiting for me to post some reviews on OneNote 2007, listen up. Microsoft has a web-based preview of Office 2007 (including OneNote). “The preview allows users to try out Office 2007 components directly, or be guided through walk-through tours of the various new features of each product, ” writes Nate Mook of BetaNews.com.

There is a line, though…currently at 137 minutes. In any event, if you’ve been aching to see Office 2007, this should perfect for you. I also apologize for not getting a real review up. I’ve pretty much been working 24/7.
