Microsoft Equation Editor 3.0
13 October 2005 Posted By: TracyPosted in: Other, Software Info, Tablet PC University Series
In our forums, there’s been discussion about some people trying to find half-decent equation writers that do a little more than the, er, lacking Equation Writer Microsoft put out for free in their Education Pack.
Most of our solutions so far have cost upwards of $99, and I’m sure most of those programs have a good reason to be so pricey, but I just need to be able to put fancy equations in my physics lab write-ups.
TPCU: Mechatronics Engineering
31 July 2005 Posted By: TracyPosted in: Tablet PC University Series
Man, I’m sorry guys. I’m JUST NOW getting around to posting these two and I’ve had them since mid-March! This is cool though because I had never heard of Mechatronics Engineering before the surveys, and both of the following are majoring in it.
Today we’re hearing (finally) from Chris Renton (of Australia) and Oliver Budack (of Germany), both engineering students who use their tablet in the classroom. Thanks, guys!
Windojitsu: Physics Illustrator Hints
28 May 2005 Posted By: TracyPosted in: Other, Software Info, Tablet PC University Series, Tips / Tricks
Windojitsu.com (a blog of one of the programmers) has some hints on the MS PowerToy Physics Illustrator, for all those who like to play with it for school or fun (or both ^_^).
"Some mates of mine asked me about about Physics Illustrator last night, and I googled it… whoa boy! I’ve never seen such love and praise written about any piece of code I’ve touched.
"The outpouring of love and excitement over Physics Illustrator really surprises me. It’s a fun and compelling demo app, no doubt. But as an actual end-user app, it leaves much to be desired. The UI is completely undiscoverable (hint #1: read the help file, seriously) and without an undo feature, it can be quite frustrating to use.
TPCU: Double Majoring in Computer Science and Tablets
11 April 2005 Posted By: TracyPosted in: Tablet PC University Series
Our next topic for the TPCU series is one which will probably hit home for a lot of our readers (as this is a tech blog): Computer Science. How can a person who centers around a keyboard find a tablet in any way appealing? Easy. You can use a keyboard with a tablet and still enjoy all the great tablet features. We want to make your student programming experience as enjoyable as possible, and in our book, that means using a tablet ^_^.
Today helping us out will be Chris Webb, a CS honors student at the University of Portsmouth (U.K.). Once again, most of this post will be his comments from the questionnaire (which we’d still love to hear from anyone who wants to fill one out!), but I’ll still be adding in things here and there. In the spirit of the post, my comments will be in the format of /comments/
.
TPCU: Double Majoring in Biology and Tablets
13 March 2005 Posted By: TracyPosted in: Tablet PC University Series
To assist with the series, we’ve invited students to voluntarily fill out a questionnaire answering the questions we like to cover in a typical TPCU session (and yes, we’re still taking questionnaires if you’re a student or past student of any major and would like to get your ideas heard. Just go here, fill it out, and send it to the email stated in the post).
For this lecture you’ll be hearing from Molly, a frequent poster here and around the tablet web world. She already holds a philosophy degree, and is now taking a bunch of biology and chemistry courses to cover prerequisites for Med school, with her major currently being "biology" (lol, did I get that right, Molly?).
Even if you’re not a biology major, read these guest lecture articles. They really have a lot of tips Trev and I forget to mention, or just didn’t even think of. Most of this stuff can be applied to any major too, just like most of the tips we have here can be applied by non-students.
I’ll be on the sidelines for this post mostly, only interjecting when I feel left out of the fun or want to add a little something, as her responses pretty much hold their own. I’m a little out-of-it from NyQuil anyway (*sigh* sick during spring break…), so it’s probably best I don’t write much ^_^.
Enjoy!
TPCU: Double Majoring in Engineering and Tablets
4 March 2005 Posted By: TracyPosted in: Tablet PC University Series
I’d call this the first day of classes but I think that’d be stretching the TPCU thing too far (lol) so I’ll just call this the first post in our new degree series ^_^.
Figured I’d start with an easy one: my major. Well, granted my major is technically petroleum engineering, but given that’s not probably the most popular, we’re grouping all engineering together today. I know aerospace engineering is different than biomedical engineering, but they all have the same general idea and there’s really only so many things specific to each major. That said, on with the show. (Note: These articles won’t contain everything you’ll find useful in your major, just what certain majors would find more useful than others. And, as always, everything here is just suggestions ^_^).
TPC University: Degree Series Announcement
27 February 2005 Posted By: TracyPosted in: Tablet PC University Series
Trev and I are pleased to announce we’ll be adding a new segment to our website we like to call "Tablet PC University." We’ll be looking at different majors and going through ways a tablet PC and related software (or whatever else) can help make you more productive at whatever focus you may have. Look for our nifty logo in at the top of the article to know it’s a TPCU series article ^_^.
Medical Texts Online at the NCBI
29 December 2004 Posted By: TracyPosted in: Digital Books, Tablet PC University Series
If you’re in the Medical/Science field, you may want to check out the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnical Information) website. It has a number of free searchable texts which are always handy to have in conjunction with a Tablet PC.
"The Bookshelf is a growing collection of biomedical books that can be searched directly by typing a concept into the textbox above and selecting "Go". Try one of these searches:
"cell cycle control…………..immunodeficiency………….. protein evolution
"Books are also linked to terms in PubMed abstracts: when viewing an abstract, select the "Books" link to see phrases within the abstract hyperlinked to book sections."
